Colombian mine accident kills 9 after warning of gas accumulation

An explosion occurred yesterday at a coal mine near Bogota, Colombia, killing nine miners, hospitalizing six, and leaving one in critical condition.

The incident occurred at 3pm local time at the La Trinidad mine in the town of Sutatausa, 44 miles north of Bogota.

The incident occurred despite the National Mining Agency (ANM) saying it had warned of a gas leak at the site after inspecting the mine on April 9.

After the explosion, 15 miners were trapped about 600 meters below the surface. Sutatausa Mayor Jhonatan Ojeda told El Dorado Radio that three of the miners were able to get out of the mine on their own and a further three were rescued alive about an hour later.

The six surviving miners were taken to Ubate Regional Hospital, where five were found to be in stable condition, although they showed signs of inhaling toxic gases.

However, the sixth survivor was reported this morning to be in serious condition, including central nervous system damage. He was kept alive using invasive mechanical ventilation until he was transferred to the intensive care center at the Fundacion Santa Fe in Bogota.

Ubaté hospital administrators thanked the governor and the ambulance service for their quick response.

ANM’s press release confirmed that an accidental explosion had caused an emergency situation inside the gallery in a section called La Ciscuda.

“The National Mining Agency expresses solidarity with the families of the victims and regrets the incident, which resulted in six miners being rescued alive thanks to timely rescue efforts.”

ANM confirmed that its agents visited the mine in question on April 9 and pointed out problems with gas accumulation, coal dust management, and ventilation processes.

Inspectors forwarded a list of safety recommendations to be enacted within 30 days. 25 days have passed since the inspection and the accident. It is not yet clear which of the recommended safety measures have been taken. The mine is operated by a company called Carbonera Los Pinos.

This is the second mining-related tragedy to afflict the village of Sutatausa in recent times. In March 2023, an explosion at the El Hoyo coal mine, also caused by gas buildup, killed 21 miners.
