Consumer Reports wants the USDA to release information about salmonella testing on chicken products.

Consumer groups want USDA to release information about previously approved testing methods. Currently, the department says it is not satisfied with the false positives.

Consumer Reports said the USDA must disclose information about how it tests for salmonella on some chicken products, which the agency initially deemed adequate but which the Trump administration said was not accurate enough.

In a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Mindy Brashears, the nonprofit consumer advocacy group said the department’s delay in implementing testing activities for not-ready-to-eat (NRTE) breaded and stuffed chicken products was unfounded. These chicken products are particularly problematic because the packaging typically displays photos of what appears to be a ready-to-eat product, encouraging consumers not to cook the products thoroughly enough to kill salmonella.
