Costa Rica reports a salmonella outbreak. one death

Costa Rican health authorities are investigating an outbreak that has affected more than 30 people.

The Ministry of Health (Ministerio de Salud) said a preliminary epidemiological and sanitary investigation revealed a link to a commercial establishment in Ciudad Colón de Mora. Local media reported that it was a store that mainly sold chicken.

The Ministry of Health inspected the site and ordered a temporary closure while the investigation was completed and relevant corrective actions were identified. During the visit, issues related to cleaning and disinfection processes, temperature control, and food handling were identified.

Salmonella Diagnosis
A total of 32 patients had an epidemiological link to the consumption of food from the outlets under investigation. Twelve people have tested positive for salmonella, and one death may be linked to the outbreak.

In the Mora-Puriscal region, 83 people are showing symptoms of diarrhea, and 43 patients are being investigated for suspected food poisoning.

The outbreak control team includes the Ministry of Health, the Costa Rican Institute of Nutrition and Health Research and Education (INCIENSA) and the National Animal Health Service (SENASA).

INCIENSA is analyzing food samples. SENASA is reviewing aspects related to traceability and handling of meat products associated with its facilities.

Authorities advised people to eat food only from establishments with a valid health permit, ensure stores maintain adequate cleanliness, ensure staff use appropriate food handling measures during food preparation, and wash hands frequently before consuming food.

Figures from the Department of Health show 20 outbreaks were investigated in 2025.

The incident affected 392 people, hospitalized 13, and caused no deaths. They were associated with hospitals and healthcare facilities, food preparation facilities, homes and community events.

Pathogens in the identified outbreaks included Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Cheese caused two outbreaks, and potato salad and ground beef caused one outbreak each.
