Zak Crawley notched his third successive Under-30 County Championship score for Kent after Northamptonshire scored 684 against two records declared at Canterbury.

After opening 100-day matches for Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter and Calvin Harrison, Nathan McSweeney reached triple figures on Saturday as he all recorded centuries in Northants’ top four for the first time.

Procter hit his first double ton as he remained unbeaten on 261 before being handed over to Kent, who lost Ben Compton and Sam Northeast cheaply as they kept an eye on England openers Crawley under pressure.

Crawley’s Test spot has come under scrutiny after an underwhelming Ashes, averaging just over 31 points in 64 games. This means Kent could score big points to cement their position.

Crawley, who had made 9 and 20 at Durham last week, showed some patience in reaching 26 but missed Harry Conway’s drive and his off-stump was pushed out before Kent were 119 for six.

Crawley’s England opening partner Ben Duckett was eliminated by Nottinghamshire by one run before Joe Clarke’s 136 gave the county champions a 450-run lead over Glamorgan at Trent Bridge.

After Glamorgan were 113 runs out of a 166-run first-innings deficit, Duckett was dismissed by a direct hit from Sean Dickson in the mix with Ben Slater, who made 70 for 9 in Notts’ 284-run win.

Ben McKinney had raised the prospect of replacing Crawley or Duckett at Bristol without dismissing them, eventually dismissing Durham’s 605 to 244 for five declared in Gloucestershire.

Kemar Roach and Ben Raine cemented Durham’s dominance with three wickets each as Gloucestershire were 168 for 8 at stumps, still trailing by 437.

Craig Overton’s career-best 141 lifted Somerset to 348 in reply to Essex’s 149 at Chelmsford. Here the hosts recovered from 45 to 3 at their second dig to close on 131 without further loss.

An uninterrupted 86 between Paul Walter (63 no) and Matt Critchley (53no) helped Essex rally, but they still trail their opponents by 68 heading into the second day.

Rishi Patel’s unbeaten 133 and Australian opener Jake Weatherald’s 96 helped Leicestershire fight back after Surrey were bowled out for 520 at Kia Oval and the visitors closed for 350.

Sonny Baker and Kyle Abbott claimed four wickets each to skittle Yorkshire to 177 before Hampshire took a lead of 167 for 93 to 2 at Headingley.

Rob Yates’ unbeaten 75 backed Warwickshire’s score of 154 for 5 and left Sussex on 217 after being bowled out for 204 at Hove.

Harry Came made 83 for 3 in Derbyshire’s 235 in reply to Lancashire’s 351 at Emirates Old Trafford, while Brooke Guest made 60. James Anderson was 1 for 33 in 14 overs.

Opening fifties Daniel Lategan (65) and Jake Libby (79) helped Worcestershire reach 200 for 7 and make 208 against Middlesex, who had previously made 183 at Lord’s.
