Crypto CEO kidnapped in Toronto released after  million ransom paid

The CEO of Canadian cryptocurrency company WonderFi was kidnapped Wednesday and held for ransom, according to CBC. Dean Skurka was reportedly pushed into a car in downtown Toronto during rush hour and released uninjured after electronically sending $1 million (possibly CAD) to his kidnappers.

The WonderFi CEO is the latest cryptocurrency celebrity to be the victim of a violent robbery. A security company told CBC that this was the 171st incident of physical violence aimed at stealing cryptocurrency.

Skurka’s company reported third-quarter earnings a day before the incident and generated revenue of CAD 41 million over the past nine months. Meanwhile, the price of Bitcoin soared past $76,000 this week, setting a new all-time high for the digital currency.

WonderFi is backed by Shark Tank co-host Kevin O’Leary and is one of Canada’s most prominent publicly traded cryptocurrency companies, according to Cointelegraph.
