CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet Review: Real Hair Regrowth Results

Last Updated on May 17, 2026 by Eve Dawes

My hair loss started after Covid, and I’ve tried so many things over the last few years to get my hair back. So when I came across the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet, an FDA cleared red light therapy device clinically proven to increase hair growth rate by 123% in just 12 weeks, I had to try it. What started as a gift for my husband turned into a device we both use almost daily, and here is exactly what we think.

As a beauty editor with over 15 years in the industry, I have direct brand relationships and hands on access to some of the most advanced beauty devices available. I have been testing CurrentBody’s LED technology for years across their face mask, neck and decolletage mask, and now the hair growth helmet. This article contains affiliate links and gifted items.

My husband has always had a widow’s peak and has been dealing with male pattern baldness for a while now. My own hair has thankfully grown back thick after my post Covid hair loss, but I’m doing everything I can to preserve it and stay preventative on the journey. Plus I’ve always had some thin patches at the front from years of tying it back in a bun as a professional ballerina and now because I love a slick back. The CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet has become a non negotiable part of both of our routines, and the science behind it is genuinely compelling.

What is the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet?

The CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet is an FDA cleared red light therapy device that uses 120 red light LEDs delivering wavelengths between 620 and 660 nanometers to energize hair follicles and support scalp health. It is designed for fuller, stronger and thicker hair growth from home with just 10 minutes of hands free use per day. It’s also FSA and HSA eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity. All of these factors are important given the investment and there being so many ineffective versions out there that aren’t created at effective wavelengths or FDA cleared.

It comes in two sizes, medium for head circumferences from 21.3 to 23.2 inches and large for 23.3 to 25 inches, both priced at $859.99. My husband and I both fit the medium. We just adjust the built in headphones which are on a slider for the perfect fit.

How red light therapy works for hair growth

The LED Hair Growth Helmet uses a spectrum of clinically proven red light wavelengths (620–660nm), recognized as the most effective range for supporting hair growth and scalp health. The light stimulates mitochondrial activity inside follicle cells, supports scalp health, improves hydration and reduces redness and oiliness.

The spacing of the lights is also important, and CurrentBody takes all of that into consideration with 120 red light LEDs that deliver full scalp coverage to create a device that works. The result over time is:

Calm redness and irritation, increasing scalp hydration by 15% and reducing oiliness by 61%*. Support stronger, more resilient hair, with strands 22% less prone to breakage*. Reactivate hair follicles to keep hair in the growth phase for longer, delivering 123% increased hair growth and 72% reduced hair loss*.

This is the same red light science that powers the CurrentBody LED face mask I’ve been using for years, just calibrated for your scalp rather than your face. If you trust the science on LED face masks, you can trust it on the scalp.

The clinical results explained

CurrentBody commissioned an independent 84 day clinical study with Intertek on 31 subjects aged 24-54 with mild to moderate hair loss or thinning. Participants used the helmet once daily for 10 minutes per session on clean dry scalps. The study used dermoscope analysis, TrichoScan, hair loss counts, sebum and hydration measurements and expert visual grading.

The results at day 84 were all statistically significant:

  • Hair loss reduced by 72.3%
  • Hair growth rate increased by 123.1%
  • Hair density increased by 26.1%
  • Visual hair density increased by 37%
  • Scalp oil reduced by 60.8%
  • Hair thickness increased by 96%
  • Scalp condition and hydration improved by 15%

These are not modest numbers. A 96% increase in hair thickness and a 72% reduction in hair loss over 12 weeks is the kind of clinical data that makes the $859.99 price tag (use my discount code GLAMOURCB) to bring that price down) start to feel reasonable when you compare it to ongoing topical treatments, in clinic laser sessions or hair transplant surgery.

This is all good in theory but I’m always dubious of before and after photos and always want to try and test things myself. As well as see if it’s something I’ll actually use and have time for. There’s only so many beauty devices I can fit into my day!

My experience with the helmet

I originally got the hair growth helmet for my husband, and then started borrowing it. So, now, since it fits it both, we share.

My hair grew back thick after lots of Trichologist treatment plans and scalp dermastamping and rolling with One Skin and Calecim to deal with my post Covid hair loss but I am doing everything I can to keep it that way. And red light therapy fits perfectly into a preventative routine. The 10 minute hands free, wireless sessions are genuinely easy to slot into a busy day. I do mine either in the morning while I’m having breakfast or doing emails, or in the evening when we’re watching TV. It’s one of the few beauty devices I use where I don’t have to stop doing anything else to use it.

In terms of what I’ve noticed, and actually my hairdresser was first to point it out. I have baby hairs along my hairline and all over my head and it gives me peace of mind that I’m being proactive about hair preservation, especially during perimenopause.

My husband’s experience with the helmet

My husband’s always had a widow’s peak and has been dealing with male pattern baldness for a while. He was the original reason we got the helmet, so he started using it way before me, back in August 2025. He uses it daily and has been seeing visible changes in the density of his hair, particularly along the hairline.

What makes the helmet work for him is exactly what makes it work for me: it’s hands free, only takes 10 minutes, and it doesn’t require any product application or mess. For someone who isn’t interested in elaborate hair care routines, the helmet is essentially the only thing he has to do.

He was dubious it would work and it wasn’t until I showed him the before and after photos he could see the difference for himself. The crown area has responded particularly well (the widows peak looks the same as that’s his natural hairline, not a receeded hairline).

How we fit the helmet into our daily routine

The 10 minute session length is what makes this work for two busy people sharing one device. We use it at different times of day so neither of us is waiting around. Mine is usually morning while I’m eating breakfast or doing emails, or in the evening. He usually uses it late morning after working out.

That’s the entire routine. No products, no mess. Just 10 minutes a day each, scalp clean and dry, hands free. It even has bluetooth headphones so you can listen to your favorite podcasts and make calls, etc. And it has a digital display with a countdown timer so you can see how much time you have left of your treatment.

The fact that we can share it also saves money on needing two devices. The only downside is that it’s too bulky to travel with, so we do miss weeks.

Who is the CurrentBody hair growth helmet best for?

Best for:

  • Anyone with mild to moderate hair loss or thinning.
  • People dealing with post Covid hair loss, postpartum hair loss or hair shedding from stress.
  • Men with male pattern baldness or a receding hairline.
  • Anyone who wants to be preventative about hair density and scalp health.
  • Couples or partners who can share one device.
  • People who prefer at home devices over in clinic treatments or daily topicals.
  • Anyone whose insurance allows FSA or HSA spending on the device with a Letter of Medical Necessity.

Skip it if:

  • You have severe advanced hair loss where transplant or medical intervention is more appropriate.
  • You aren’t consistent with daily use, since the results depend on it.
  • The price point is genuinely outside your budget without the FSA or HSA option.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet really work?

Yes, based on independent clinical data and our experience. In an 84 day clinical study conducted by Intertek on 31 participants with mild to moderate hair loss, the helmet produced a 123% increase in hair growth rate, a 72% reduction in hair loss, a 26% increase in hair density and a 96% increase in hair thickness. All results were statistically significant. My husband and I have both seen visible changes from consistent daily use.

How long does it take to see results from the CurrentBody hair growth helmet?

Clinical results show statistically significant improvement after 12 weeks of daily use. Most users report noticing baby hairs, reduced shedding and improved scalp health within the first 4 to 8 weeks, with more visible density and thickness changes developing across the full 12 week clinical timeframe and beyond.

How often should you use the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet?

Once daily for 10 minutes per session on clean dry scalp. The device shuts off automatically. Consistency is more important than longer sessions, and exceeding the recommended 10 minute daily protocol does not improve results.

Is the CurrentBody LED hair growth helmet FDA cleared?

Yes, the CurrentBody LED Red Light Hair Growth Helmet is FDA cleared for hair growth using red light therapy at wavelengths between 620 and 660 nanometers.

What hair loss does the CurrentBody helmet treat?

The helmet is designed for mild to moderate hair loss and thinning, including post Covid hair loss, postpartum hair loss, hair shedding from stress, male pattern baldness in earlier stages, and general hair preservation for those who want to be proactive about scalp health and density.

Is the CurrentBody hair growth helmet worth the money?

At $859.99 it is a significant investment, but when compared to ongoing topical treatments, in clinic laser therapy sessions or hair transplant surgery, the cost over time becomes much more reasonable. It’s also FSA and HSA eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity, which can make it more accessible. My husband and I share one device, which effectively halves the per person cost.

Can a couple share one CurrentBody hair growth helmet?

Yes. My husband and I share one helmet and it works perfectly because each session is only 10 minutes, we use it at different times of day, and you’re using it on clean hair. It’s also quick and easy to wipe down with alcohol wipes if you want. The medium and large sizes are based on head circumference, so as long as both partners fit within the same size range, sharing works seamlessly.

CurrentBody Skin led hair growth helmet review: Final verdict

The CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet is one of the few beauty devices in my routine that requires almost zero effort and delivers genuinely impressive clinical results. The combination of FDA clearance, independent clinical data showing a 123% increase in hair growth rate, the 10 minute hands free format, and the fact that two of us can share one device makes the investment make sense.

If you are dealing with hair loss, thinning, post Covid shedding, male pattern baldness in earlier stages, or you simply want to stay preventative about hair density as you get older, this is the device I would recommend.
