Great Britain and Ireland won the Curtis Cup for the first time since 2016 with a thrilling win over the USA at Sunningdale.

Singles wins from Sarah Byrne, Patience Rose and Lorna McClymont put the home team close to a famous victory, but Mimi Rose saved par on the 17th hole to secure a crucial half-point over Melanie Green.

Rose lost the 18th hole after sending her second shot out of bounds, but she was surrounded by jubilant teammates as the celebrations on the green began in earnest.

How Europe Won Curtis Cup Thriller

Great Britain and Ireland went into the final day two points ahead, but America's hopes of a famous comeback grew as 15-year-old Asterisk Talley ended Lottie Ward's unbeaten week with a 3&2 win.

Lottie Ward became the first British woman to win the Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this year. We went down to her home club to find out about the junior section that has helped her to make rapid progress in the women’s game.

Anna Davis beat Hannah Darling by the same margin to hand the USA their second point of the day, while Byrne ended her unbeaten run by beating Catherine Park 3&2 to take GB and Ireland a step closer to victory.

Rose had the biggest win of the day, beating Joey Campos 6&5, while McClymont won 3&2 over Megan Schopil to take the home team to 10 points after winning three holes. Meanwhile, Jasmine Koo took the lead from the first hole and won 4&3 over Beth Colter.

Mimi Rose recovered from a two-shot deficit with eight holes to tie for the title against Green, sinking a par putt on the 17th to take a one-shot lead with one hole to play, giving GB and Ireland a solid half-point lead.

She lost the final hole with a double bogey but had already handed the hosts the 10.5 points needed for victory, while McClymont parred the 16th hole to beat Donegan 3-2 and cut the winning margin.

Matthew proud of 'fantastic' win

“It's absolutely fantastic.” Matthew He told Sky Sports. “They were a fantastic team and I'm really proud of them. They worked really hard every day, every session. It didn't look like it was going to go our way today but they were really resilient and it was a fantastic experience for me to get to know them.

“At one point, I looked and it was all red. Luckily there weren't that many scoreboards so the players couldn't see them, but we had been playing well on the back nine all week and it really showed.

“Some of them turned the game around, it was a really exciting finish. Hats off to the Americans. It took two teams, and they played fantastic golf all three days. It was a spectacle for women's golf. When you look at those two teams, the future of women's golf is in good hands.

“It was a great competition. I love being up close. It's exciting for all the fans, and it's great to be on top. With everything, winning the Solheim Cup (as captain) and playing in that game. Anytime you're part of a team and representing your country, you can't be prouder.”
