
A moment of silence was also observed in Mayotte. More than a week after the storm, survivors are struggling without water, communication and electricity, and rescue workers are trying to provide urgently needed assistance.
French Mayotte lawmaker Estelle Youssouffa told the BBC that 90% of the island between mainland Africa and Madagascar had been destroyed.
“All public services have been shut down,” she said.
“Sick people can’t get help or get to the island’s only hospital, which is almost completely destroyed.”
Mayotte Governor François-Xavier Bieuville said a field hospital with the capacity to treat up to 100 people a day would be operational from Tuesday.
