Darren Lehmann: Northamptonshire appoint former Australia coach | cricket news

Former Australia coach Darren Lehmann has been appointed on a two-year contract and will coach Northamptonshire County from February 2025.

As a player, Lehmann played 27 Tests and 117 international caps for Australia, but he is probably more remembered for his time in charge of the national team from 2013 to 2018.

Lehmann led Australia to two Ashes victories and the 2015 Cricket World Cup during his tenure, but resigned after his team was implicated in ball tampering in South Africa, with Cricket Australia clearing him of any wrongdoing.

The controversy saw skipper Steve Smith and lieutenant David Warner banned for a year, Cameron Bancroft banned for nine months and a review into CA’s methods. I lost.

On Friday, Cricket Australia announced that Warner’s lifetime leadership had been lifted with immediate effect.

“Northamptonshire has a great history in our game,” Lehmann said after taking charge. “I’m looking forward to meeting the players, learning about the club and its past, and creating our own history over the coming months and years.” said.

“The selling point for me is a group that wants to get better, follow their and the club’s dreams, make memories and play at the highest level possible.

“I will encourage this on and off the pitch, as well as an open door policy. I am confident we will have success and enjoyment along the way.”

Northamptonshire chief executive Ray Payne said he was delighted to have someone of Lehmann’s caliber leading the club for the next few years.

“We have great coaches who want their players to succeed on and off the field.” he said

“We are delighted to have been able to secure a new manager with the history, reputation, skill and knowledge that Darren has. This is a real milestone for the field and once again demonstrates the club’s aspirations to reach the highest level on the field.

“From my first conversation with Darren it was clear his passion and excitement for the opportunity and his coaching philosophy aligns well with the club’s goals.”

Lehmann has also experienced a variety of successful roles outside of international management, including leading Deccan Chargers to IPL victory in 2009, winning the Big Bash with Brisbane Heat in 2012-13 and serving as an assistant coach in 2023-24. Queensland 2011-12.
