De Bonne, Allevol, Oak Street – Permanent Style

This is a seasonal offering featuring the best products I’ve purchased recently. Comments on fit and style are included. Helpful summaries, quick gear reviews: These are all products I’ve already purchased and worn, so I can help if you have any further questions. Ask in the comments.

As mentioned, the last two are Lucas’s. It’s really good to have different perspectives (and a wider range of styles) within a team. In fact, on this topic we recently hired our third employee, Bao. Bao says readers have probably already started meeting him via support emails. He was truly a godsend. Welcome Bao!

1. Good quality ‘artist shirt

Size: Medium

€271

Two things that stand out about this shirt from De Bonne Facture are its lightness and color. It’s made from a really light yet transparent washed cotton voile material. It feels very cool against the body and I can’t wait to wear it in the summer if I can really feel the effects.

And the colors are great. Unusual but subtle. I chose ‘Rosewood’ (see photo above), which goes well with jeans as well as brown pants. The dark brown shirt (above) is also really cool. It’s a little purple. If you want something safe, there’s also a standard Navy one.

2. Buck Mason ‘Hollywood Pants’

Size: 32

$298

When Lucas, Manish, and I went shopping at Buck Mason in LA last month, one of the pieces we all took (in different colors) were pants from the Hollywood suit line.

This is a really cool cut. It’s a true high-rise fit that’s wide but not exaggerated, tapering slightly through the thigh for a comfortable fit. Now that I’ve met the Buck design team, I understand why the cut is so good. At this price point, few brands do all of their own pattern work.

I brought a natural linen herringbone. It’s a light linen, so it wrinkles a little more, but it’s also cool.

3. Allevol quarter zip sweatshirt

Size: Large

£195

I like sweatshirts with collars because they make the area around the neck stand out more. The problem is that I don’t really like that necklace. The McCoy necklace I have is a bit neat. So I was excited to try this product from Allevol at Clutch Cafe.

The collar stands up a bit more and falls down very nicely. The material is softer and lighter than most Japanese sweatshirts. But I’m more interested in that direction. It’s like I no longer have patience for raw denim.

4. Vicky Turbeville Southwestern Jewelry

Size: N/A

My cuff: $400

We met Vicki and her partner, Steve Nelson of Mountain Lion Trading, while in LA. They are both great people. Steve in particular is a legend in the Southwestern art and artifacts trade.

Vicki handles the jewelry department and is by far the easiest to shop for. Lucas and I both bought simple necklaces for our partners and a beautiful vintage cuff. Highly recommended as an online source or a good place to visit. Minutes from Redondo Beach.

5. Anthology ‘Dress Chino’

Size: 50

$325

Since The Anthology launched this feature, we’ve had quite a few questions from readers about it. So we apologize for not including this sooner. To be honest, I’ve just started to pick up and wear a few of the items.

I would describe this outfit as a really cool, smart pair of chinos. If I were to do that, it’s the kind of clothes I would wear most when tailoring. The material is soft, slightly peachy cotton, and has dressy details such as wrapped seams. The fit is quite high, slightly higher than usual, and is flat, so the back has the same rise.

6. strap camera strap

Size: N/A

£125

I recently purchased a Fujifilm XE-5 camera and I definitely wanted a good strap. Our photographer Alex recommended this product and it has proven to be a very good purchase. It has a slightly vintage feel, which is certainly welcome, but it’s also very functional.

I haven’t found the ability to wear the camera inside a jacket and then unstrap it to take it out. Perhaps it’s because I’m so precious about the fit of my outer layers. It definitely works if you want it to. And the strap has been shortened to allow more use on the wrist.

7. Dalmo cotton/linen knit polo

Size: Medium

£331

Dalmo, an Italian hand-knitting company that has been featured several times on PS, recently opened its first website. They are a small operation and in the past they focused on customization (and still do), but now their products will be much more accessible through this site.

I’ve tried a few on the site recently and would like to recommend the knit polo shirt in a linen/cotton blend. I’ve never been particularly fond of pure linen knits, despite several attempts over the years (e.g. here). It’s just that it’s too heavy and it looks bad. But the cotton/linen mix is a great idea, and the brown ‘Patrizia’ was really nice to wear.

8. Rubato short-sleeve linen shirt

Size: Medium

£285

Rubato opened a different version of its pop-up in London this week. There they only visited for one day with few appointments so that people could see only the new releases. I tried them all (of course), but my favorite was this short sleeve shirt. Because it’s so hard to find one of those cuts that I like.

This product has a slightly higher neck, which is nice. The sleeves are a bit square (which I know some readers will actually prefer), but the ends are folded a bit to create the perfect taper. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about that product line (which I believe was released to everyone yesterday).

9. Oak Street ‘Rowing Oxford’

Size (Lucas): 11 (US)

$372

These aren’t the ones I actually bought, but Lucas has been wearing them for almost a year and I’ve seen them age really nicely. These shoes fall into the category of shoes that you might think of as boat shoes with chunky soles. It has a round and casual look, but has a sole suitable for walking in the countryside.

It’s not a category I’ve explored yet, as I usually wear boots in those kinds of scenarios. But if so, these are definitely ones I would go for. More so than any other product from Timberland, Paraboot, Sperry or Yuketen that Lucas has also tried.

10. Lady White ‘Band Pants’

Size (Lucas): XL

£255

While we’re on the topic of Lucas, let’s include this too. I recently wrote about lazy travel clothes, and it was Bryceland’s sweatpants that caused some controversy. This is the clothes Lucas wears. These are cotton pants with pin tucks from Lady White, a famous LA brand that I visited on a recent trip.

The material has a cleaner drape than sweatpants, and it also helps that the wrinkles are visible. They look natural and have good elasticity. You might think it contains elastin or something, but it doesn’t.
