There’s something timeless about a good lipstick. Even on the most informal of days, one swipe can help you feel organized in seconds. I like having a few natural colors on hand that are comfortable to wear and don’t require much thought. This simple DIY matte lipstick has become one of my favorites.
Nutrient-rich butters, waxes, and oils are used to create a silky texture and a soft, matte finish. This formula glides on easily and provides just the right amount of color without feeling heavy or dry. Once you get the hang of it, creating your own lipstick is quick, easy, and incredibly satisfying.
Why make lipstick at home?
There’s something satisfying about making your own everyday essentials. Lipstick may seem like a small thing, but making it yourself is a careful process. You can choose the color, shape and even scent. In the past, I’ve experimented with homemade lipsticks and created several of my favorite sparkly lipsticks. This time I wanted to try the matte version.
Another advantage is customization. You can add or subtract ingredients to suit your taste. Want a gentler formula? Add a little more jojoba oil. Do you prefer stronger pigments? Add more mica or food coloring. The great thing about DIY skincare is that you can tweak it until it’s perfect for you.

matte lipstick ingredients
Each ingredient in this recipe plays an important role in creating the right texture and feel. Here’s how it works together:
- wax It gives structure and staying power to the lipstick. It also creates a lightweight barrier that helps trap moisture.
- oil painting wax It keeps the blend smooth and uniform, preventing the glycerin from separating from the oil. It’s also what ties my homemade hair conditioner together.
- cocoa butter It adds elasticity and leaves lips feeling soft and creamy. Naturally rich in antioxidants, it helps keep your lips soft.
- mango butter It’s a bit lighter than cocoa butter (it’s actually a bit astringent) and adds slipperiness without being sticky. It is rich in vitamins A and E and has an excellent moisturizing effect.
- jojoba oil Mimics the skin’s natural oils. It goes well with lotion or face oil, but is also good for dry lips.
- glycerin It is a natural humectant that locks in moisture and helps the lipstick feel comfortable even with a matte finish.
- rose kaolin clay It provides a smooth matte texture and subtle coloring and helps it adhere to the lips.
- red mica Adds soft color and a bit of shimmer. I also used natural red food coloring to deepen the tone a bit without adding too much of the shimmer of the mica.
- peppermint essential oil Optional, but use a few drops for a cool, refreshing feeling. Mint also reminds me of sugarcane this time of year!

How to Use Homemade Lipstick
I love making my own natural lipsticks, but they don’t perform quite the same as conventional options. It feels soft and moist on the lips, but contains no artificial ingredients to prevent color bleeding. After eating and drinking, you must reapply.
This also doesn’t have super bold and crazy shades like traditional lipsticks do. That said, you can also experiment with colors by using different mica or adding cocoa powder. With this matte lipstick recipe, you can create a solid lipstick that still feels soft on the lips.
I used a lip balm tube for storage, but you can also find lipstick molds online if you like them. You can also use a small bottle or tin if you prefer, but this method may be more difficult to apply because it has a harder consistency.
