Donald Trump Appoints Elon Musk to Co-Director of Government Effectiveness

President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Elon Musk will co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency. The department’s acronym stands for DOGE, Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency. The CEO of Tesla, owner of Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Neuralink and It will open the way. Reduce spending and restructure federal agencies.”

Specifically, DOGE will “provide advice and guidance from outside the government,” suggesting it will not be a formal government agency requiring legislative approval and funding. Rather, DOGE will collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget, according to the press release.

The Trump campaign noted that DOGE’s work would be completed no later than July 4, 2026.

Musk has talked about creating a Department of Government Efficiency over the past few months while campaigning for Trump across the country. However, it is unclear what DOGE will actually look like and whether Trump will actually accept this proposal from Musk.

At a New York rally in October, Musk promised to see “at least $2 trillion in cuts” within federal agencies if Trump wins. It is yet to be seen whether Musk and Ramaswami will keep their promise. Musk did not clarify which agencies or police departments would receive such cuts.

Trump and Musk have grown quite close in recent months, and their relationship has accelerated since the two hosted an X Spaces chat together in August. During Trump’s 2024 presidential bid, Musk donated more than $100 million to a pro-Trump super PAC called America PAC while holding rallies for Trump in key swing states. Trump attended the New York Economic Club in September and promised Musk that he would serve as the representative of the Governor General (DOGE).
