Donald Trump is safe, suspect in custody after man found with rifle

A witness took photos of the vehicle, which was later stopped north of the club in Martin County.

President Trump said in an email to supporters that he was “safe and well.”

“Nothing will slow me down,” he wrote. “I will never surrender!”

The incident comes nearly two months after a gunman attempted to assassinate President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring his ear.

The Secret Service confirmed in a post to X that it was investigating a “protection incident” involving Trump that occurred just before 2 p.m. ET (BST) on Sunday.

The White House says President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the alleged incident at the Trump International Golf Course, “where the former president was playing golf.”

“They are relieved to know he is safe. They will receive regular updates from the team,” the White House said.

Harris posted that she had been briefed on the matter by X and was glad Trump was safe. “Violence has no place in America,” she wrote.

President Trump was wounded on July 13th when a gunman named Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on him with an AR-15 style rifle from the roof of a nearby building while addressing a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania.

One spectator was killed in the shooting, and 20-year-old Crooks was killed on the spot by a Secret Service sniper.

The Secret Service has come under intense scrutiny over how the shooter in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was able to shoot the former president.

The agency’s head, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned two weeks after the incident.
