Donald Trump refuses to hold 2nd debate with Kamala Harris

In a statement released Saturday, Harris-Wales campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said Americans should have “another opportunity” to watch Harris and Trump debate before the November election.

“It is unprecedented in modern history to have only one general election debate,” she said. “The debates provide voters with a unique opportunity to see the candidates side by side and evaluate their competing visions for America.”

Harris said on X, formerly Twitter, that she “gladly” accepted the debate invitation and that she hoped Trump would participate as well.

After the September 10 debate, Trump announced there would be no more debates.

He spoke at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Saturday, claiming he won the previous debate and saying it was “too late” in another.

He accused Harris of wanting another run because she was “losing so badly” and that “the voting has already begun.”

Some voters at the Trump rally told the BBC they wanted another debate to be held.

“If you’re not afraid, why not do it? They were both great (in the last debate),” said Trump supporter Steve Castellano.

Mr Castellano added that he thought the moderators were “a little biased” in the last debate and laid out some conditions for a rematch.

“They should be having the debate again on the network of Trump’s choosing,” he said. “What I would really like is a great podcaster to do it. I would really like Joe Rogan to do it.”

Harris is slightly ahead of Trump in national polling averages, and North Carolina could be crucial in his bid to return to the White House.

The revelation that Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate Trump endorsed for governor, had posted Nazi-like, racist and sexually explicit comments on a pornographic website has raised questions about whether Trump can win over voters in that state.

Robinson did not attend Saturday’s rally, and Trump did not mention the scandal or the candidate as he addressed a crowd of supporters, many of whom wore the colors of the American flag.

A Snap poll released shortly after the Sept. 10 debate found that most viewers thought Harris performed better.

Since then, most national polls have shown Harris with a slight edge among voters.

The two candidates traded accusations in previous debates, with Trump calling Harris a “radical left-wing liberal” and a Marxist who is destroying America.

Harris has taunted Trump, downplayed the size of his rallies and quoted Republican critics.

The BBC’s US news partner, CBS, has also invited both presidential candidates to a debate in Arizona in October.
