Michael Hollick posted a stunning eagle on the final hole at the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open on Sunday, putting him in YouTuber Brad Dalke’s credible top 30.
Victory looked certain after overnight co-leader Hollick missed his par putt on the 16th, leading by three shots before fellow South African Hennie Du Plessis made bogey on the 17th.
Hollick birdied the 17th hole, then made an excellent approach shot to create an eagle on the final hole, holing it from 20 feet for a final round 67 and winning the tournament at 18 under par.
“I was actually very calm throughout the day and continued to do what I had done all week,” Hollick said.
“Once you start hitting a few birdies, it’s easy to think too far ahead. I sat back and said to Dave, who caddied for me, ‘If I have a chance to win the tournament by playing the back nine, that’s what I want.’
“It’s funny, when I went to bed last night, I thought it would be amazing if I got the chance to make it at the end and win.”
He added, “It’s really amazing. It’s been such a great opportunity for me and my family.”
The results were brutal for Du Plessis (-17), who finished two strokes behind Hollick and Bernd Wiesberger and had seven birdies in the final round to shoot a 66.
The only blemish on his final round came on the 17th hole, and even after missing a birdie putt on the final hole, he probably thought he had done enough to at least secure a playoff spot. In the end, he had to settle for second place, one stroke behind Holic.
Austria’s Wiesberger (-14) tied for third with France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy, while Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz tied for fourth (-12). England’s Marco Penge and Joe Dean were among four players who finished tied for 9th (-9).
The YouTube star disappeared after the initial challenge.
Earlier this week, YouTube golfer Brad Dalke shot a second-round 66 in his DP World Tour debut and looked to be challenging the leaderboard, two strokes behind at the halfway stage.
Dalke, best known for his contributions to the popular Good Good YouTube golf channel, received a sponsor exemption to play in Munich and entered contention in a round Friday that included seven birdies and a drop shot.
But his challenge rose in the third round on Saturday when he shot 75 with five bogeys, and on Sunday he shot a 1-over 73 to finish at 5 under par.
Dalke found water twice on the par-5 11th hole Sunday and made triple bogey, ruining his final round and dropping him to 30th place.
The 28-year-old was a golfing prodigy in his youth, winning the Junior PGA Championship in 2015 and finishing runner-up in the U.S. Amateur a year later, before qualifying for both the 2017 Masters and U.S. Open, but failing to make the cut in both.
He is now expected to play in the PGA Tour’s Rocket Classic later this month.
