A fire broke out in Sabah, Malaysia’s Borneo island, destroying more than 1,000 houses and leaving thousands of people homeless, fire authorities said.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday in a floating village in Sabah. The people there live in close-packed wooden houses built on stilts.

The local police chief said that about 9,000 residents were affected, but no deaths or injuries were reported.

It was difficult for emergency responders to access the damaged area because the access road was narrow, and as the fire intensified, strong winds reportedly fanned the flames.
