Tom Lawrence’s opener helped Rangers beat Dundee United 1-0 in the Scottish Premiership to move them up to third place.
Philippe Clement and his side were under pressure to respond after a 3-0 defeat to rivals Celtic before the international break and the response was immediate.
After a neat touch from Cyril Desus, a superb solo run from Lawrence saw him beat Jack Walton to score after just seven minutes.
Rangers continued to attack Dundee United’s area, but the first half ended with a somewhat controversial finish, with Emmanuel Adegboyega catching Conor Barron’s foot with a powerful challenge, only to receive a yellow card.
VAR reviewed the on-field decision but upheld referee Don Robertson’s decision. It was no surprise that Adegboyega was substituted at half-time, with Rangers handing a debut to deadline day signing Nedim Bajrami.
United improved in the second half – they failed to register a shot on goal in the game – but could have equalised in the 55th minute, though Christian Trapanovski’s shot went wide.
Lawrence came close twice but it was his early goal at Thanadis that sealed the win. Rangers edged past Dundee United to move five points behind Celtic, as Jim Goodwin’s side fell to fourth and lost their first Scottish Premiership game of the season.
