Dundee face rivals Dundee United at Dens Park on Thursday in their second derby of the season. Sky Sports live broadcast.
Tony Docherty’s side ended 2024 on a high by ending a run of three successive Premier League defeats with a 2-1 win at St Mirren.
Jim Goodwin’s men also picked up an important win, beating Aberdeen 1-0 through a 94th-minute goal from Kevin Holt to move three points clear of third place. This gave United 31 points. This is the same number of points as when they were relegated in 2023. This time we have half the season left.
This is the first time the two clubs have met at Dens Park for almost three years. Both seasons lasted in the Scottish second division. Dundee United last season and Dundee the season before.
However, they met at Tannadice in August and drew 2-2. If the next installment of this famous rivalry produces anything close to this result, we’ll be in for some fireworks to kick off the new year.
Doherty ready for ‘Electric’ derby
Dundee president Tony Docherty said Sky Sports News:
“It’s a fantastic game. It’s great for the city. I live here and I feel the pulse of this place. Everyone is crazy about the derby.
“The players are buzzing, especially after a really strong performance and result away to St Mirren.
“I love that we are at home. The crowds have been fantastic while we have been here and a lot of our success has been based on home games. The crowds have played a big role in that.
“Any team that comes to Dens Park I want them to not just play as a team, they want to play for the people in the stands and I hope we create that atmosphere.
“It will be absolutely electric. Just like last time, it will have everything, tradition and history. Dundee United will walk down Tannadice Road just like last time.
“It’s a great opportunity and I hope it’s good advertising for Scottish football and both clubs.”
Goodwin: Bragging rights are at stake.
dundee united president Jim Goodwin said Sky Sports News:
“Needless to say, we are all very excited and looking forward to the game.
“The first game we played at Tannadice was a great spectacle, with two very good teams playing and creating a great atmosphere.
“We are expecting a similar type of game on Thursday. It means a lot to both supporters and I am delighted that we go into the game in very good form.
“We are expecting a hostile atmosphere from the home support, but we will have great support there to back the team up.
“This game means a huge amount to the city. Bragging rights are at stake so we can give a good account of ourselves and our supporters can have bragging rights after the game.”
Watch the Dundee derby live on Sky Sports Football and Main Event from 5.15pm on Thursday 2 January. Kick-off at 5.30pm following the Rangers v Celtic match (3pm kick-off).
