Mango Salsa Ingredients

You only need 8 ingredients to make this sweet and spicy salsa recipe.

  • Mango – Any ripe mango will work here, but Ataulfo or Champagne mango (pictured above) is my first choice for this recipe. They usually appear in grocery stores in the spring. I prefer it to red mango because it has a softer, juicier texture and a sweeter taste.
  • red bell pepper For color and crunchiness.
  • Red onion and garlic – For a sharp, savory taste.
  • master – It adds green color to salsa and adds a refreshing taste.
  • Fresh lime juice and zest – You want a bright, tangy kick.
  • jalapeño – For heat.
  • and sea salt – To make every flavor stand out!

Substitutions and Variations

This mango salsa recipe is so flexible! Feel free to change it to suit your taste or use what you have on hand. Here are my favorite variations:

  • Add avocado. For a richer, creamier salsa, mix in 1/2-1 chopped avocado.
  • pickle something. For a brighter, tangier salsa, swap the raw jalapenos for pickled jalapenos. I think pickled red onions would be good here too!
  • Process in bulk. Add 1/2 cup cooked black beans to this mango salsa for a heartier dip.
  • Skip the cilantro. Not a fan? Instead, use finely chopped fresh parsley or mint leaves.
  • Make it more gentle. If you are sensitive to spices, omit the jalapenos or remove the seeds and skin before adding them to the salsa.

How to Make Mango Salsa

The first step in this mango salsa recipe is to prepare the mangoes. Here are my favorite ways to cut a mango:

  1. Cut off the sides of the mango. Place the fruit on a cutting board with one of the long, thin edges facing down. Make two incisions slightly to the left and right of the center of the mango and remove the flesh from the seeds.
  2. Score the mango flesh. Place the mango halves with the skin side down. Score the flesh in a grid pattern, pausing before cutting into the skin.
  3. Remove fruit from skin. Cut horizontally between scored flesh and skin. The fruit emerges from the pulp in small square shapes.

Next, finely chop the remaining ingredients.—Peppers, onions, cilantro, jalapenos. Grind the garlic and zest and juice the lime.

Finally, mix everything together and season to taste. It’s so easy!

This mango salsa recipe is best served fresh, but if you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The longer a mango sits, the softer and juicier it becomes.
