Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed on the court during her third match on the WTA Tour against Kristina Liutova at the Memphis Tennis Classic.
Alexandrova, the tournament’s top seed, had to stop playing and undergo lengthy treatment after falling 5-4 in the third set of the three-hour match in 34-degree Celsius temperatures.
However, world number 19 Alexandrova could no longer continue and was forced to retire. Liutova, 16, was victorious in her WTA Tour debut.
The teenager was seen in tears after the game. She will next play American Maya Joint in the round of 16.
