Elon Musk has supported California’s SB 1047 bill, which would require creators of very large AI models to create and document safeguards to prevent them from causing serious harm.
“This is a difficult decision and some people may be upset, but all things considered, I believe California should probably pass SB 1047, the AI safety bill,” he wrote Monday afternoon on X. “For over 20 years, I have advocated for regulating AI just as we would regulate any product/technology that poses a potential risk.”
Musk, who has pledged to leave California but whose own large AI model company, xAI, must comply with the requirements of SB 1047, has warned in the past of the dangers of uncontrolled AI.
Meanwhile, rival organization OpenAI recently announced it was opposing the bill, instead supporting an alternative.
