Emergency response to boy who swam for hours to save family

Police have released a recording of a call between emergency services and a 13-year-old Australian boy who swam for hours to help his family after they were swept out to sea in early February.

In the call, Austin Appelby said his younger brother, Beau, 12, and younger sister, Grace, 8, and their mother were still in the water.

“I don’t know what their condition is right now and I’m really scared,” he said.

The boy also explains that he felt “very tired” after his grueling ordeal.

Austin fainted on the phone and was taken to hospital, but was told his siblings and mother were all found alive after being rescued 14km (8.5 miles) off the coast.
