Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon: Britain’s No.1 withdraws with leg injury as disappointing season continues | tennis news

Emma Raducanu withdrew from Wimbledon due to injury the night before her opening match.

The England No.1 was due to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in their first match on Court 1 on Monday, but confirmed on Sunday night that she would not play due to a stress fracture.

Radukanu has been managing a right leg injury since appearing in the Queen’s final in early June, but concerns were raised about her participation at the All England Club on Saturday when she cut short her training session with her leg strapped.

She later confirmed that she was suffering from an injury. Sunday morning, after a practice session with hitting partner Alexis Kanter, she planned and hoped to be able to play in the tournament.

However, final tests showed the injury had developed into a stress fracture, forcing her to withdraw the night before the opening match.

Raducanu planned to play through the injury but was advised not to.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this but sadly I will not be competing at Wimbledon this year,” Radukanu wrote on social media.

“I have done everything possible to get on the start line tomorrow, but after my final examination tonight I have been advised that the issue I was managing has developed into a stress fracture and I have been medically advised not to push any further.”

She added: “It’s really hard to process because playing at Wimbledon in front of my home crowd means everything to me.”
