Emma Raducanu suffered a quick send-off to Amanda Anisimova in Indian Wells, losing their third-round clash after 52 minutes.
The British star lost 6-1 6-1 to the American, a two-time major finalist.
Anisimova reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals last year and is ranked sixth in the world, and her level of play was on full display against Raducanu.
After parting ways with coach Francisco Roig earlier this year, Raducanu was reunited with Mark Petchey on a daily basis during this tournament. While she performed well in the opening match, Radukanu struggled against Anisimova after dispatching Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets.
The American was under pressure from the start, with Raducanu breaking the Briton’s serve in the first game.
With a double break, Anisimova quickly led 4-1 and never allowed Raducanu to win another game in the set.
She closed the first set with another break and to further complicate Raducanu’s difficulties, Anisimova broke again at the first opportunity of the second set.
Anisimova wrong-footed a stunning drop shot as Raducanu was in complete control. Raducanu claimed the game but the Englishman could not find a response as he again faced an ominous 4-1 deficit in the second set.
Raducanu made another break, allowing Anisimova to continue the match.
She achieved a simple and clinical victory over the Englishman in just 52 minutes.
Sabalenka progress
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the round of 16 of the Indian Wells Open with a win over Jaqueline Cristian on Sunday.
Sabalenka won 6-4 6-1. The 2025 runner-up is seeking her first desert title after losing to Mirra Andreeva in last year’s final.
Then, Naomi Osaka defeated Camila Osorio 6-1 3-6 6-1 in three sets.
This is the first time Sabalenka and Osaka have faced each other since the 2018 US Open, and the only previous match in which Osaka won.
In men’s singles, second seed Jannik Sinner advanced after beating Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-2.
