Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes helped England take the lead on day three of the first Test match at Emirates Old Trafford, but Sri Lanka held an 82-run lead at the end of the match.
The home team played two outstanding sessions with both ball and bat, with Smith's (111) superb strike being the highlight of England's first innings, as they finished with 358 runs and a 122-run lead.
Warke (2-34) and Gus Atkinson (1-38) made a mark early in the second innings, with Sri Lanka falling 10-2 behind in the first two overs.
However, Angelo Mathews (65) along with Kamindu Mendis (56no) were the shining lights for Sri Lanka as they crossed the 1,000-run mark with 78 for the sixth wicket in the Test match against England, and the visitors frustrated the home side at times as they finished on 204-6.
