Enzo Maresca described the 48 hours leading up to Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Everton as “the worst 48 hours since I joined the club”.
Chelsea returned to the top four of the Premier League with a win over the Toffees after a run of four games without a win in all competitions, but Maresca was clearly not in a good mood despite securing their first win since November 22.
Amid huge outrage, the Blues boss refused to clarify what the issue was or who his words were aimed at, after suggesting he and his team felt unsupported.
When asked about Marlo Gusteau’s performance against Everton, Maresca praised his players before venting his frustration.
“It’s the players’ effort,” he said at the post-game press conference.
“We have said many times that Reece (James) and Marlowe (Gusteau) are both full-backs and today they are both midfielders, so the effort, the openness and the way they want to learn has been fantastic and that is why I praise the players because, despite the many problems, they have had a complicated week well.
“The last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because many people did not support us. I am very happy for Marlowe and the efforts of the rest at that moment showed that they are all there and want to help this club.”

After being asked to clarify his comments, he reiterated: “It was the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people did not support me and the team.”
As his remarks caused confusion, reporters kept asking who he was talking about and whether it was the fans.
“(People) in general. In general.” When asked again whether he meant the fans or the media, Maresca said, “I love the fans and I’m very happy to be with them.”
