Estimates suggest 'significant suffering' from parasites

Posted Date:

According to scientists, infections caused by foodborne parasites are decreasing overall but are increasing in some areas.

The incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) burden was estimated for 14 diseases from 2000 to 2021. Foodborne DALYs associated with Paragonimus decreased over the period, but increased markedly for Clonorchis.

The effort found that 277 million illnesses were caused by potentially invasive parasites, and 171 million were due to foodborne transmission.
