Everton fans are beginning to absorb the shocking news that the Friedkin Group have entered regulatory proceedings to become the club’s new owners, and their attention is now focused on who Dan Friedkin and his group are and what they will bring to the table.
Friedkin signed a deal with Farhad Moshiri for a 94.1% stake in the club at 11am on Sunday, which was made official on Monday after he withdrew from the competition in July.
Texter expressed his respect for the club, its fans and the community in an interview with SSN, and his comments were welcomed by the majority of the fan base.
TFG wants to complete the ownership approval process before discussing plans for the club more broadly, and that is something that should be respected, but fans have an endless curiosity to know what type of ownership Dan Friedkin and his colleagues will have.
Texter believed he was the frontrunner and had a good chance of reaching a deal, and he had maintained a positive relationship with Moshiri in the weeks and months leading up to Monday, and contrary to popular belief, the two men were on the same page about the American’s plans and enthusiasm for the project.
Even though Moshiri chose the Friedkin route, that friendship still remains, and his decision was based purely on the fact that he felt it could provide a quicker solution to a situation that had become more urgent after several failed attempts and the sales process was taking longer than expected.
While Moshiri personally would have been more attracted to the Texter deal, he felt the TFG deal offered a more immediate solution for the club, staff and fans.
They are all tired of the rollercoaster ride of the past two years. Textor will keep going and we are sure to hear more from the Crystal Palace co-owner soon about his plans to add a British club to his multi-club portfolio.
What about the Friedkin Group and its CEO, Dan Friedkin?
Those who knew them in Texas described them as a highly respected family, with one acquaintance describing them as “good, honest people.”
Friedkin’s colorful personality belies his entrepreneurial image, as he has dabbled in a variety of businesses, piloted a variety of high-performance vintage military aircraft, and performed aerial stunts throughout North America and Europe with the U.S. Air Force and the Horsemen P-51 squadron.
His skills as a stuntman in movies like Dunkirk go without saying.
In addition to his main business being a Toyota dealership, he also owns several luxury hotels and resorts in the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
But Everton fans will be eager to see what experience he can bring to the club after years of struggles both on and off the pitch.
For a glimpse of what that looks like, supporters need only look to Italy and AS Roma, where Friedkin bought the club in 2020 for just under £600m, effectively the same amount he paid for Everton.
The Serie A team, like Everton, was struggling financially and not performing as well as expected.
It is no exaggeration to say that since TFG arrived, results have been mixed. Current manager Paulo Fonseca left the club and was replaced by Jose Mourinho, who led the club to the inaugural Europa Conference League final, where they won against Feyenoord.
But with the team sitting ninth in Serie A and looking out of the Champions League race, Friedkin and his son Ryan decided to part ways with their former Chelsea manager.
They are businessmen and are not afraid to make tough decisions if they affect the business. This was proven again when club legend Daniel De Rossi was sacked after failing to win in four games at the start of the season.
This led to fan protests last week that prompted the resignation of club CEO Lina Soulukou. Friedkin has had his share of problems with Sucre at Roma, but has consistently shown he is not afraid to make changes when necessary.
They step into a Merseyside club that has been in near-standstill for the past two years, struggling with a sale, PSR issues and the constant threat of relegation.
Everton fans will have to wait until the takeover is complete to see what TFG will look like, but what they want from TFG is hope, positivity and, above all, unity.
Things that have been in short supply for too long, despite the efforts of many.
