Famm, a queer-powered brand search platform, launches LinkedIn for the LGBTQ+ community

Famm, a discovery platform for queer-owned brands, was created by BIPOC queer couple Cat Perez and Marianna Di Regolo to help users find LGBTQ-owned businesses. Now we’re launching a new social networking app that allows LGBTQ+ professionals and business owners to connect and collaborate.

Now available for iOS and Android devices, Famm Connect includes the usual features such as a feed for sharing and discovering posts, direct messaging, and sections for managing and nurturing connections. But what sets us apart is our focus on creating a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ professionals to engage authentically.

The launch of a new social networking application designed specifically for LGBTQ+ professionals is timely and meaningful. LGBTQ+ individuals often face discrimination, microaggressions, or prejudice in professional settings, and it can be difficult to find support in mainstream networks that do not address their specific concerns. They may also be reluctant to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity on platforms such as LinkedIn for fear that it may harm their career prospects.

Famm Connect aims to provide a better alternative to mainstream platforms. The goal is to provide a space where users can easily find others who understand their experiences and challenges, while also allowing them to celebrate their identity rather than hide it.

“It’s very clear that there is not a lot of representation of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, founders, and business owners,” Perez told TechCrunch. “We need to look to each other to support each other as we build businesses, grow them, and figure out how to spend queer dollars on queer businesses. We need to show up for each other, especially now.”

The core functionality of the app is very simple, but one feature that stands out is the “Open to” tag. These tags can be added to user profiles to indicate the purpose for which they use the app, such as coffee chats, mentoring opportunities, or volunteering. This allows users to be intentional when contacting others and not simply spam them.

Famm, which counts about 1.4 million LGBTQ-owned businesses in the U.S., also plans to include a list of businesses to advertise their products and services. Perez points out that advertising on larger platforms is difficult because business owners offer services or products that use certain terms that can be flagged or banned. Business listings are currently free, but the platform will soon introduce premium business profiles that will cost $20 per month or $200 per year.

Other features Famm is building include a section dedicated to in-person networking events, job listings, and sponsored posts.

The app is free to download. It is by invitation only and unlimited referrals are possible.
