FDA investigates new salmonella outbreak

Federal officials are investigating a new outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections.

The Food and Drug Administration reports that the source of the pathogen has not yet been determined.

There are 62 confirmed patients, but the FDA is not reporting whether any patients have required hospitalization. The agency also did not report the patient’s age or place of residence.

FDA investigators have begun tracking efforts, but the agency does not report which foods are being tracked.

There are likely many more sick people in this outbreak because some did not seek medical attention and some were not specifically tested for salmonella infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that for every confirmed case in a salmonella outbreak, there are 29 undetected cases.

In other outbreak news, the FDA has begun sampling Listeria monocytogenes infections caused by requested/soft ricotta cheese from Clover Hill Dairy LLC.
