Fire breaks out on the roof of the Rio Olympic Velodrome

The fire that broke out at the Velodrome in Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park was extinguished early on April 8, there was no risk of the fire spreading to other areas of the complex, and no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The county fire department said in a statement that about 80 firefighters and 20 fire trucks extinguished the blaze and that there were no casualties.

The velodrome was built for the 2016 Rio Olympics and is managed by the city government. It houses the Olympic Museum, which displays historical artifacts and exhibits from the Olympic Games, including the Olympic flame and medals.

In 2017, two fires destroyed the roof and caused minor damage.
