Meanwhile, fires continued to spread in Spain, forcing more than 90,000 people to evacuate from areas around Madrid and Avila.
Spain’s Minister of Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen said about 77,000 hectares have been damaged by forest fires in Spain.
She added that the wildfires in Avila are the largest wildfires in the country’s recent history.
A new front has also opened near the coastal city of Valencia since Sunday night.
“The fire has surpassed our ability to put it out,” Valencia regional president Juanfran Pérez Llorca told reporters late Saturday.
Valencia’s central government representative, Pilar Bernabe, said the situation in the region was likely to worsen throughout Sunday.
The fire may spread further on Sunday due to higher temperatures and lower humidity.
One civilian was killed in a small fire that broke out in the Valencia region last Saturday. This is the only civilian death reported so far.
Earlier this week, two firefighters died while fighting a fire near Bordeaux.
Evacuation orders were also issued late Saturday for at least eight municipalities near Toledo, but it was unclear how many people were involved.
“Difficult times lie ahead,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said during a visit to wildfire-hit areas west of Madrid on Sunday, but added there were “positive” signs that the fires were being brought under control overnight.
He also said a “major public agreement on the climate emergency” was needed.
Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso described the situation as “the worst fire in the region’s history.”
