Dive Insight:

Postbiotics have attracted a lot of attention in the food and beverage industry in recent years, with many consumer products adding them to their ingredient lists with the promise of promoting gut health.

Through ingredient evaluation, Fonterra was able to determine: Function and nutrition of pAn ostbiotic cultured protein that can complement dairy ingredients in food applications. And Superbrewed Foods has demonstrated how the fermentation platform can be adapted to ferment other inputs.

The multi-year collaboration aims to develop novel biomass protein solutions based on the fermentation of multiple feedstocks, including Fonterra’s lactose permeate (generated during dairy processing), and to increase the value of lactose by converting it into sustainable proteins.

Chris Ireland, Fonterra’s General Manager of Innovation Partnerships, said: “Working with Superbrewed Foods is a fantastic opportunity. Their cutting-edge technology aligns with our mission to deliver sustainable nutrition solutions around the world and deliver more value from milk to farmers by meeting the global demand for protein solutions.”

Superbrewed Foods has been working to expand its presence in the U.S. market. In March, the company received FDA approval for its postbiotic cultured protein, allowing it to be adopted by food and beverage companies in the dairy and dairy alternatives segment.

The company has also been granted a U.S. patent on postbiotic proteins, which gives it 18 years of market exclusivity to produce, use, and commercialize all forms of bacterial biomass proteins.

“We are excited to partner with a company of Fonterra’s caliber who recognizes the value in bringing postbiotic cultured proteins to market and is an important step in expanding our offering of biomass ingredients that further contribute to sustainable food production,” Byran Tracy, CEO of Superbrewed Food, said in a statement.
