Seattle, Washington – Food Safety News today announced the appointment of Morgan Holm as Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief, effective February 1, 2026. Holm brings 35 years of distinguished journalism and media leadership experience, most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Oregon Public Broadcasting, where she transformed the organization into a leading local news outlet and a pioneer in digital-first public media.
This appointment marks an important milestone in FSN’s development as a non-profit organization. With the successful launch of our reader-supported membership model in December 2025, Food Safety News is positioned for sustainable growth and expanded influence in independent food safety journalism.
“Morgan is the perfect leader for this moment,” said Peter Gustafson, Food Safety News Board Chairman. “His vision for collaborative, mission-driven journalism is perfectly aligned with FSN’s long-term strategy, and his track record of building sustainable media organizations while maintaining editorial independence gives us tremendous confidence in the path forward. The Board is united in our support and we look forward to the continuity and growth he will bring to FSN.”
Holm’s 30-year tenure at Oregon Public Broadcasting included overseeing all local content production across radio, television and digital platforms, leading major digital modernization initiatives, championing collaborative journalism partnerships and driving award-winning reporting. Under his leadership, OPB won a Peabody Award and launched popular programs such as the daily talk show Think Out Loud. He also pioneered partnerships with local newspapers to strengthen the local news ecosystem and implemented initiatives focused on staff diversity and newsroom ethics.
“I joined the FSN Board of Directors last summer and have closely followed Peter and the team as they transform this organization,” said Holm. “Independent food safety journalism has never been more important. The FSN Board of Directors’ vision for a sustainable, reader-supported model is exactly what independent media needs, and I am committed to building on the incredible momentum FSN has created.”
Bill Marler, founder and publisher of Food Safety News, added: “I’ve personally funded FSN for 16 years because someone has to watch. But this publication is bigger than me. It belongs to the food safety community. Morgan gets it. He understands the mission deeply and shares our commitment to independence and integrity. I will be passing the torch to someone I completely trust, and that gives me peace of mind about the future of FSN.”
Holm will inherit an organization that has established itself as the leading independent voice in food safety journalism, providing cutting-edge news and in-depth analysis to food safety experts, industry leaders, policymakers and consumers around the world. The membership launch in December 2025 generated strong early adoption, validating reader demand for independent, ad-free food safety coverage.
Before joining OPB in 1990, Holm began her journalism career at Jefferson Public Radio in 1986. He received his degree from Southern Oregon University.
Peter Gustafson will remain as Chairman of the Board and step back from day-to-day operations while continuing to guide FSN’s strategic direction.
