Former NRL winger Matt Utai is in critical condition after a drive-by shooting.

Former NRL star Matt Utai is in a “critical condition” after being shot multiple times outside his home in Sydney, Australia.

New South Wales police confirmed Utai, 44, “suffered gunshot wounds to the lower leg, shoulder and upper chest” during the drive-by shooting in Greenacre, a southwestern Sydney suburb.

Superintendent Rodney Hart added that the 44-year-old man was in a “serious but stable condition” after undergoing surgery.

“This was clearly a target,” Supt Hart said.

“This was a brazen ambush. Whether the victim was the intended target or someone he knew or was associated with will all be part of the investigation.”

Police said shots were fired from a white SUV, which was later found burned in nearby Wiley Park.

Police recovered a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident for forensic examination.
