Former South African President Jacob Zuma's Daughter Marries King of Eswatini 'For Love'

There are strong traditional ties between Eswatini and the Zulu monarchy in South Africa. The current Zulu King, Miszulu ka Zwelithini, is the nephew of King Mswati III.

Former President Zuma, who resigned in disgrace amid corruption allegations while in office and is still being sued in court over a 1999 arms deal (he denies any wrongdoing), is currently enjoying a political renaissance.

His new party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), came third in South Africa's general election this year.

The 82-year-old is widely respected by supporters for his adherence to his culture and traditional Zulu beliefs, and is said to have several wives and 20 children.

Nomsebo, whose mother is her long-time fiancée Nonkululeko Mlongo, wore the bright colours of the Eswatini kingdom on the final day of the Reed Dance ceremony at the Ruzini Palace on Monday.

This ritual, known as the Umranga ritual, is performed to prevent people from starting sexual activity at a young age.

The King can choose a bride from among those in attendance, and at the event, Madam Juma was introduced as “Ripobela”, the Swati word for royal fiancée.

He has been investigated in the past because of the age of his bride. In 2005, he chose 17-year-old Phindile Nkambule as his wife, days after lifting a ban on sexual relations with girls under 18.

Just two months after it first came into effect in 2001, he was fined the equivalent of a cow for breaking the ban to fight HIV/AIDS by taking a 17-year-old girl as his ninth wife.
