Four new non-stop flights to Puerto Rico just launched

For many years, much of the East Coast of the United States lacked a simple, nonstop route to the Caribbean. Travelers in places like Richmond, Norfolk, and Buffalo often had to connect through major hubs, adding time to a simple trip south. The gap is starting to narrow. Puerto Rico is one of the clearest examples of how an underserved market is now directly connected to the Caribbean.

Four new JetBlue routes are currently in service. San Juan Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport with Richmond, Virginia; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Norfolk, Virginia; and Buffalo, New York.. The first flights began on March 26, with the remaining routes launching on March 27, sparking a surge in new access in key East Coast markets.

New non-stop gateway set

The new route is already changing the way travelers reach Puerto Rico.

Flights began earlier this week from Richmond and Philadelphia, followed by Norfolk and Buffalo, each operating three to seven times a week. Together, they add a significant number of new seats to the market and, just as importantly, eliminate the need for connections in cities that previously lacked direct service.

Only Philadelphia had existing direct access. Richmond, Norfolk, and Buffalo now join the non-stop map for the first time.

Governor Jenniffer González Colón described the move as part of a broader effort to increase connectivity.

“Puerto Rico continues to solidify its position as a priority destination within the U.S. air network,” she said, pointing to a strategy focused on expanding access and fostering economic growth.

Central role of airlift

Over the past few years, Puerto Rico’s tourism history has been defined more by connectivity than by campaigns.

More direct routes reduce travel times and simplify travel planning. Travelers who once had to travel through major hubs can now hop on a single flight and reach San Juan in a few hours. These conveniences expanded the island’s reach, attracting visitors from secondary markets and strengthening demand in existing markets.

The cumulative effect is visible throughout the tourism economy. The hotel is showing steady occupancy even after the peak season. Restaurants and attractions attract a steady stream of visitors seven days a week. Travel patterns are spreading, with increased flight schedules leading directly to weekday arrivals.

Willianette Robles Cancel, executive director of the tourism company, pointed to accessibility as a driving force behind this growth.

“This new connection represents an important step in continuing to position Puerto Rico in a strategic market and promote access for more visitors,” she said.

Enter new markets

Each of the four new paths has its own unique impact.

The Richmond connection will add more than 25,000 seats annually and generate an estimated $17 million in economic activity. Philadelphia offers more than 59,000 seats and an estimated $42.7 million in impact, strengthening one of the Northeast’s strongest travel corridors to the island.

Buffalo and Norfolk each will gain approximately 34,000 additional seats and are expected to make economic contributions of $19.7 million and $20.1 million, respectively.

What stands out is the introduction of a completely new traveler pipeline. Residents of western New York and coastal Virginia can now reach Puerto Rico nonstop, allowing for shorter trips, easier planning, and repeat visits.

Buffalo travelers can book winter trips without transfers. A couple in Richmond could leave in the morning and arrive in Old San Juan in the afternoon. This level of access determines how often and easily people choose an island.

JetBlue’s expanded network

JetBlue remains Puerto Rico’s largest airline, serving the island’s three major airports and operating more than 20 routes connecting cities and destinations in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

These new additions deepen the space.

“The expansion of our routes from San Juan reflects our continued commitment to Puerto Rico,” said Dave Jehn, the airline’s vice president of network planning and airline partnerships. “We continue to focus on strengthening connectivity, supporting tourism and making it easier for families and friends to stay connected.”

This connectivity goes beyond leisure travel. This supports business travel, group travel and visits associated with Puerto Rico’s large diaspora population, all contributing to steady demand throughout the year.

What to Notice When Landing

The airborne effect is not abstract. It comes down to how your destination feels when you get there.

Small boutique establishments and new developments are gaining increased visibility as travelers explore more than traditional options.

From established restaurants in Santurce to new concepts in the metro area, dining rooms are packed seven days a week. Travel agencies are welcoming a wider range of visitors, including short-stay travelers who take advantage of direct flights from newly connected cities.

At the airport, changes are made immediately. The arrivals board shows more departure cities, and flights arrive at a steady pace throughout the day, reflecting our ever-expanding network.

Airport growth scope

Aerostar President Jorge Hernández emphasized the importance of adding markets that were previously underserved directly.

“The opening of this route is an important step in consolidating markets that do not have direct flights to and from San Juan,” he said. “This expands Puerto Rico’s air accessibility and enhances accessibility to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.”

Airports serve as indicators of momentum. When new routes are launched, it signals the airline’s confidence and continued demand from travelers.

The additions of Richmond, Norfolk and Buffalo highlight both.

Continued demand across the travel sector

Puerto Rico continues to attract interest across leisure, business and group travel.

Discover Puerto Rico CEO Jorge L. Pérez noted that continued demand was a key factor in the new route.

“These new connections reflect the strong demand for Puerto Rico as a destination for leisure travel, business, events and conventions,” he said.

That demand has remained consistent. Travelers are booking year-round and there are fewer gaps between peak seasons. Many people return encouraged by the ease of non-stop access and the variety of experiences across the island.
