French 75 Mocktail
French 75 is the epitome of elegance, a sparkling cocktail that exudes sophistication. But who said you need alcohol to enjoy this bubbly beverage? With a few simple swaps, you can make this French 75 mocktail just as refreshing and chic as the original. Perfect for special occasions like brunch, baby showers, or holiday gatherings, this mocktail will keep you refreshed and sensual without the alcohol.
It started with a bet
hello. My name is Hilary Sheinbaum. I started participating in Dry January in 2017. This event was actually inspired by a stupid bet I made with my boyfriend on New Year’s Eve. premise? We both tried Dry Jan, no wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, shots or other drinks with ABV for 31 days. Anyone who drinks during that period loses and must buy the winner’s dinner from anywhere in New York City. No restaurants or dollar amounts were off the table. No fancy dinner if we both lose. If we both win: We will split the bill. (Did I mention I was a journalist and my beat at the time was alcohol? My friend thought he was a shoe for victory!)
In the end, I won the bet (and a free dinner from my friend Al), and in the long run, I got a lot more out of it than the meal. In just 31 days, I learned how alcohol negatively affected my sleep, mood, and anxiety. It may sound cliché, but it has changed the way I drink and my career more than anything else.
I can’t say that the *first* year lasted more than 31 days… Dry January has now become a tradition I look forward to at the beginning of each year. I drink a lot less than I used to, outside of January, and often extend my dry spell into February, March and beyond. Sober October is another month I absolutely love.
My journey over the years inspired my first book, THE DRY CHALLENGE, and my most recent book, GOING DRY: A Workbook. This workbook contains 70 prompts, exercises, and activities to encourage reflection and serve as a non-judgmental guide. Interactive pages provide insight and support to readers as they begin their personal journey.
How to start drying
Whether you want the whole Dry Jan or a soggy Jan, we recommend trying their non-alcoholic wines, beers, spirits, and NA cocktails (aka mocktails). To start your journey, there’s a site called BetterRhodes.com that has tons of NA options to try, and there’s even an app called BetterWithout that can help you find restaurants and bars with NA menus when you’re out and about. There are also step-by-step apps like Reframe that have helped hundreds of thousands of people reduce their alcohol consumption and provide support.
Finally, it is important to remember that Dry January and the challenges of dry months are not for those seeking recovery programs or recovery options. If you’re really having a hard time quitting drinking, talk to your doctor.
All that being said: As soon as the Eras tour ended (yes, I’m so sad!), my favorite mocktail was something I call French ’89 (also a nod to French75’s spin). (Taylor Swift’s birth year, after she told TIME magazine last year that she didn’t drink alcohol while on tour!)
