Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the French Open after losing to Brazil’s Joao Fonseca (19) in a close 5-set match.

The 39-year-old third seed was a 5-1 lead in the first set of their third-round encounter, with Carlos Alcaraz injured and Jannik Sinner suffering a surprise loss on Thursday, making him a favorite for the title, but Fonseca fought back to make it 5-4 to allow Djokovic to keep his composure and do his best.

Djokovic was 6-4 down in a tight second set, but his teenage opponent played brilliantly to win the third set 6-3.

Fonseca broke through in the fourth to tighten up at 2-0, but the Brazilian fought back to take a 30-0 lead and missed two more break points to make it 4-4 in an epic game that Djokovic survived.

Fonseca struggled to break the Serbian back at 5-5, but played an electrifying fourth set to pull himself up to fifth.

After allowing an ailing Djokovic to break him down, Fonseca came back from 3-1 down in the decider to secure a stunning 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 victory.
