From Lime to Uber to Hertz: Free and discounted rides on Election Day

Election day is almost here. If you haven’t yet mailed in your ballot or voted early, you may have to drive there on November 5th.

Here’s a roundup of all the freebies, discounts and information on how to get to the polls from transportation companies.

lime offers free transportation to your polling place for early voting or on Election Day. Passengers can use promo code VOTE2024 to get two free 30-minute rides within the United States.

bird and rotation We’re also giving away two free rides as part of our Roll to the Polls initiative. Riders can use the code RockTheVote2024 in the app.

“We believe voting should be accessible to everyone, and this initiative is our way of helping residents overcome transportation barriers and make their voices heard,” a Lyft spokesperson told TechCrunch.

lift is offering a 50% discount (up to $10 – Classic) to riders heading to the polls. Users can preload with ride code VOTE24 on or before November 5th. This applies not only to car sharing, but also to bike sharing (e.g. Citi Bike) and scooter sharing.

uber We also offer a 50% discount (up to $10) on transportation to the polls when riders click “Vote!” Tile in the Uber app. The app also helps users find the nearest polling place.

And on Election Day, Uber Eats is offering 25% off orders of up to $15 or as little as $25. This offer lasts from 6 PM to 7 AM local time on November 6th.

hertz From October 21st to November 5th, customers who rent for more than 2 days at ‘Participating Neighborhood’ will receive one free day. Drivers can use promo code 211636 when making reservations and cannot reserve convertibles, minivans or full-size SUVs.

What’s missing from this list is ZipcarIt helped drivers get to the polls in 2016, but doesn’t appear to have repeated that mission.

Google is once again providing official information about in-person voting and ballot drop box locations in both search and maps, with the latter displaying information about voting hours and types available at specific locations. The information comes from the Voting Information Project, a partnership between state and local election officials and Democracy Works, a nonpartisan civic group.

Moovit We’ve integrated tens of thousands of polling places in 130 counties in 11 states into our travel planning app. The app also gives users quick access to voter registration information and transit agencies that offer free rides.

From Detroit to Des Moines to Durham, there are numerous transit agencies offering free transportation on Election Day, so be sure to check with your local authorities.

“Free bus rides all day on Election Day will most definitely increase voter turnout as public transportation is a practical way for many Durham residents to get to the polls. By removing the cost barrier, we hope more registered voters will be able to vote on Nov. 5 and in all future election years,” said Derek Bowens, Durham County Board of Elections director, in a press release.
