Joao Palinha has left Fulham for Bayern Munich on a permanent transfer.

According to Germany's Sky newspaper, Bayern are set to pay Fulham £47.16 million (€56 million) for the 29-year-old, a deal that would make it the most expensive sale in the history of a Premier League club.

Palinha has signed a four-year contract with Bayern, keeping him at the club until 2028.

Fulham owner Tony Kahn said: “Today we have reached an agreement that could lead to the biggest transfer deal in the club's history. This asset comes at a vital time in the summer as we plan for the season ahead and our long-term future.”

Palhinya's transfer fee is expected to surpass that of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who moved to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal last summer.

The Portuguese midfielder almost joined Bayern last summer, but the move fell through on deadline day.

Bayern's sporting director Max Everi said: “Joao Palinha was already highly rated by FC Bayern last summer. No wonder! It was important for us never to lose touch.

“Joao really wanted to come to FC Bayern and we need a player like him. He is an important building block for our future.

“He showed his strengths again on the big stage at the European Championships and has a lot of experience having previously played in European Championships and World Cups and around 300 competitive games in the Portuguese and English leagues. He will give us more stability in the centre.”
