Genesis Invitational: Rory McIlroy is second but six strokes behind leader Jacob Bridgeman after three rounds | golf news

Rory McIlroy is in second place, six strokes behind leader Jacob Bridgeman, heading into the final round of The Genesis Invitational on Sunday.

McIlroy is seeking his first title of the season at Riviera Country Club and is in second place after three rounds but has plenty of room to make up for Bridgman.

McIlroy shot 69 with 3 birdies and 1 bogey, recording a final total of 13 under par. But it was Bridgeman who dominated the leaderboard.

Despite missing a birdie opportunity on the 18th hole, Bridgeman shot a 64 to finish the third round at 19 under par and take a commanding lead.

McIlroy later said, “It was really difficult. The greens were so fast and soft and then they got a little bumpy.”

“I was proud of myself. I kind of hung in there. I stayed as patient as possible. I wish I was a couple closer to the lead.

“I gave myself a chance. That’s all I could hope for. It’s not as big of a chance as I thought it would be.

“I want to win here,” he added. “I’m going to play my best tomorrow and see what happens.”

Xander Schauffele, at 10 under par, was tied for 5th place, and Marco Penge was one stroke behind.

Scottie Scheffler shot a third-round 66 to sit at 5 under par on the final day.
