Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer Kathy Ruemmler resigns over ties to Epstein | Business and economic news

Ruemmler’s resignation came after emails revealed his links to the deceased sex offender.

Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer, Kathy Ruemmler, has announced she will resign after revelations of her relationship with financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Ruemmler’s resignation follows the U.S. Justice Department’s recent release of investigative files on Epstein that revealed she received gifts from Epstein, provided advice on managing his reputation and likened him to an older brother.

Goldman Sachs Chief Executive David Solomon confirmed Rummler’s resignation in a statement Thursday and said he respected her decision.

“During her tenure, Cathy served as our extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of legal matters for the company,” Solomon said in a statement to Al Jazeera.

“One of the most accomplished experts in her field, Kathy was also a mentor and friend to our staff. She will be missed,” he said.

Rummler, who served as White House legal advisor under U.S. President Barack Obama, announced in an interview with the Financial Times on the 24th that he would step down from his position as chief legal officer (CLO) and legal advisor at the end of June.

Rummler told the newspaper she had been “distracted” by media attention about her relationship with Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

She has previously expressed regret for knowing Epstein and has refused to provide legal representation to the financier or advocate on his behalf to third parties.

Ruemmler is the latest in a number of prominent and powerful figures to leave prominent roles or face legal scrutiny in connection with the Epstein case.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday announced the resignation of his cabinet secretary, Chris Wormald, in a bid to quell controversy surrounding the appointment of former British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson, who has ties to Epstein.

Also Thursday, Norwegian police searched a property owned by former Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland as part of a corruption investigation focused on the politician’s links to Epstein.
