Google is tweaking the “Share Profile” feature in the Google Messages app to allow users to set custom contact names and photos on their devices for their saved contacts and others they text with. As reported Nine to Five GoogleA change rolled out late last year that ignored custom names and photos as each individual’s broadcast profile, but now you can change that again and give your friends, colleagues and family members the names and avatars you think they should have.
Google’s updated support page for profile sharing now outlines steps for setting up a local contact photo that replaces the photo your contact shared. To customize your name or appearance, tap a contact’s name or photo in a Google Messages chat, then tap the photo on the details page. Here you can switch between shared and custom items.
