Google Photos’ latest feature lets you create your own memes.

Now with Google Photos, you can create memes with your own images. On Thursday, Google debuted a new AI-based creation feature called “Me Meme,” which lets you create meme images by combining photo templates with your own images.

The new addition, which will be available for the first time to US-based users, was originally spotted in development on the Android Authority blog last October. Google made the official announcement on the Photo Community site last Thursday.

According to Google, the feature is experimental, so the generated image “may not perfectly match the original photo.” For best results, we recommend uploading a well-lit, well-focused frontal photo.

This add-on will be a fun way to explore photos and experiment with Google’s Gemini AI technology, especially Nano Banana. Google’s popular AI image model powers other AI features in the Google Photos app, such as the ability to recreate images in new styles like cartoons or drawings.

All things considered, it’s a fairly minor addition, but this type of functionality will remind users to return to the Photos app whenever they want to use AI tools rather than using a competitor’s product.

Users also tend to be drawn to the ability to display themselves in AI edits, as OpenAI discovered with the successful launch of its Sora app, which lets you create AI videos that can include yourself and your friends.

‘Me Meme’ isn’t fully released, so it may not appear in updated Google Photos apps yet. When available, it will appear under the “Create” tab, Google says. A Google representative told TechCrunch that the feature will be available to US iOS and Android users over the “coming weeks.”

To use this feature, select a template or upload your own, then tap ‘Add Photo’ and ‘Create’. Google notes that more templates are being added over time. After the AI creates the image, you can save the photo, share it on other platforms, or tap “Recreate” to let it reimagine the image.
