Gray whales migrate north along the Pacific coast during the long spring season, using up any nutrients they have along the way to forage in the Arctic, John Calambokidis, a research biologist with the Cascadia Research Collective, told The Associated Press. “When that happens, we often see gray whales desperately looking for new areas where they can feed,” he added. “That is the most likely context for this whale.”
