Great food served in a lovely manner

Visiting Montserrat is difficult. ~ no Dine at The Attic. I mean, there that There are many restaurants on the island. Also coming is The Attic. highly It is recommended by almost everyone who has anything to do with Montserrat, even remotely. (At least everyone we know is related to MNI.)

Yes, you should definitely try this place. However, there is one thing to keep in mind if you want to fully enjoy this experience. Before we get into that, let’s discuss the basics of The Attic Montserrat.

Buried Restaurant Route in Plymouth

Like many of our favorite Caribbean restaurants, The Attic is a family affair. Arla and her daughter, Carolyn, have been running the show here since the Soufriere Hills volcanic eruption forced the operation from Plymouth to the Olveston area of Montserrat in the mid-to-late 1990s.

The old loft, located on Marine Drive in Plymouth, has changed hands several times over the years. Arla worked there all those years. She continued one of Montserrat’s most cherished culinary traditions by obtaining permission to carry on the name Attic after the volcano.

Editor’s note: Much of the history of The Attic and old Plymouth is kept alive through the historic photos that adorn the restaurant’s walls. In this way, the history of Montserrat is served here as a wonderful side dish.

What’s on the menu at The Attic Montserrat?

Certainly its culinary traditions are authentic and authentically West Indian.

mostly.

Available options vary depending on what’s fresh and seasonal. Locally caught seafood, goat meat, a variety of stews and curried meat dishes, and some pretty good roti are mainstays on the menu. Homemade traditional West Indian drinks such as sorrel, ginger beer and maubi are also available, as well as a variety of fruit juices (tamarind!). The same goes for quesadillas. So, “most” of the above.

I admire you Carolyn!

That beautiful face belongs to Caroline. She does most of the service at The Attic.

But what you need to know to really have a good time here is that she’s a bit picky about the way she does her job.

Let’s say she sits you down, takes your drink order, and disappears to fill it. But then you realize you want to order something else, so you get up and walk over to the counter, advising her on the new dish you want.

Yeah, don’t do that.

Carolyn is friendly, but she doesn’t like customers ordering separately at the table. I learned this the hard way when I visited The Attic in 2019. Carolyn sternly instructed us to sit in the strict manner that often typifies the best restaurants across our islands.

Yes. Please be patient and appropriately courteous when visiting The Attic. Trust me. In any case, you won’t be in a hurry to leave, and that respect will be repaid with a warm smile and delicious food.

If you go…
