Useful Tips for Perfectly Grilled Shrimp

Prepare shrimp:

  • Start with fresh or properly thawed ones. Fresh shrimp is ideal, but frozen shrimp also works perfectly. If using frozen, thaw completely in the refrigerator or under cold running water, or place in the refrigerator overnight to thaw. Pat the shrimp dry before seasoning. Moisture interferes with good baking.
  • Size Issue: Jumbo or giant shrimp are easier to handle on the grill and less likely to overcook.
  • Shell or no shell? I prefer shrimp without shell. It's easier to eat and less messy.
  • Save time: Buying shrimp that have already been cleaned and deveined will save you a lot of time.
  • Marinate the skewers: If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent burning.

cooking:

  • High temperature, short time: Shrimp cooks quickly! Use medium-high heat on your grill and aim for 2 to 3 minutes per side for larger shrimp. Do not overcrowd the grill. Otherwise, the temperature will drop and the shrimp will steam instead of grill.
  • Look carefully at the “C”. As the shrimp cook, they turn from translucent to opaque and curl into a C shape. If it forms a perfect circle, it will be overcooked and tough.
  • Clean the grill grates: A clean grill will prevent shrimp from sticking. Preheat the grill, clean the grill, and oil it before adding the shrimp.

What is the best grill to buy

The outdoor kitchen has a gas grill, but also has a charcoal grill. If you like the smoky taste of charcoal grilling, we recommend Kamado Joe Classic Joe II! You can get it from Amazon and Home Depot. It's the best charcoal grill I've ever used, and goes great with all of my favorite grilling tools.

transform:

  • Add some spice: Make a dry rub of shrimp, add paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and red pepper flakes, toss and heat through.
  • seasoning: Add Old Bay seasoning or dried herbs such as oregano or thyme to the garlic butter sauce.
  • Cheeky goodness: Instead of garlic butter, eat it with pesto, such as pesto shrimp skewers, or try it Korean-style with a gochujang glaze. The cilantro lime shrimp I grilled were also delicious.
  • No grill? are you okay! Skip the skewers air fry Cook shrimp at 400°F for 5 to 6 minutes, shaking basket halfway through. Or boil it over high heat. cast iron skillet or grill pan 2-3 minutes on each side.

What to serve with grilled shrimp

Below are some of my favorite grilled shrimp sides.

  • Side Salad: Try tortellini salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, Greek orzo salad, Italian pasta salad, or roasted corn salad.
  • For low-carb side dish options, try tomato salad, roasted asparagus, creamy cucumber salad, coleslaw, cabbage slaw, or arugula salad.
  • You can also eat it with other side dishes. Try it with orzo, potatoes, rice or pasta.
  • Shrimp Tacos: Serve with tortillas and cabbage slaw.

save

Shrimp FAQs

Should I cook shrimp in oil or butter?

I like using both. Oil the grill and use garlic butter to flavor the grilled shrimp at the end.

What is the best way to grill shrimp?

The best way to grill shrimp is on skewers. Using a skewer makes the shrimp easier to handle. However, I realize that threading the bamboo sticks may be an extra step that you may not have time for. So if you want to skip this, use a grill basket to keep the shrimp from falling through the griddle.

How long does it take to grill shrimp?

The cooking speed of shrimp is very fast. This shrimp recipe is great when you don't have a lot of time to cook, as it's usually done in less than 5 minutes.
