Guinea soccer team kills dozens in Nzérékoré

Local media reported that police used tear gas after supporters of visiting team Rabe became angry at the referee and threw stones at the stadium.

“It all started with a disputed decision by the referee, after which the fans invaded the stadium,” an eyewitness told AFP.

Videos and images posted on social media appear to show chaotic scenes outside the stadium. A large crowd is trying to climb over the wall, and numerous corpses are lying on the floor.

Some of those lying unresponsive on the floor appear to be children.

The BBC has not been able to independently verify these videos.

Nzérékoré local journalist Paul Sakouvogi told the BBC that internet access in the area was restricted and police were guarding the entrance to the hospital where the injured were being treated.

“I observed six police cars stationed in front of three entrances to the hospital. Only medical staff were allowed into the hospital and the rest were told to return the way they came.”

Prime Minister Barr said in a statement that the incident was “tragic” and offered condolences to the bereaved families and that an investigation was being launched to find those responsible.

He also promised full medical and psychological care to all injured.
