His motive for targeting Trump has not yet been revealed, but the suspect has previously said on social media that he voted for him in the 2016 Republican presidential election but later developed a grudge against him.
On Monday, bright orange cones, barricades, police cars and police officers guarded every corner of Trump’s golf course.
The incident shocked West Palm Beach and surrounding cities.
“No matter how much security and everything else you have, if someone is willing to sacrifice their life to take another person’s life, it can happen,” Shelby Stephens, a 52-year-old Trump supporter from West Palm Beach, told the BBC.
Cosme Blanco has lived just blocks from the golf course her entire life, and said she comes there about twice a week when Trump isn’t campaigning.
The 61-year-old Trump supporter said security around the golf club is usually not overwhelming. But that all changed on Sunday when Blanco ran outside five minutes after the shooting and saw helicopters circling the neighborhood.
“I was worried. I’m 62 years old and I’ve never seen America change this much,” the Cuban immigrant said.
Blanco said it wouldn’t be difficult for the suspect to target Trump on the golf course.
President Trump rode in a motorcade across a bridge overlooking Lake Worth’s lagoon from his Mar-a-Lago resort, a journey that took about 12 minutes.
“If they saw the motorcade coming, they knew he was going to play golf. It’s common sense,” Blanco said.
